Summer is almost here, and, if your summer is anything like ours, you’ve already got at least one or two trips planned. Plus, if you’re going to be stuck in the car staring at the road for all those hours, you have to have an epic playlist to go along with it. I’m talking about one of those sets of songs that you can blast at full volume with the windows rolled down.
The thing is, you have to make sure to have just the right songs for that playlist…
The trick to a good playlist is having a good mix. If there’s anyone in the car with you (which it’s usually more fun that way), you have to account for everyone’s taste. The best way is to go for a wide variety. A little oldies, a little country, a little rock, and a little Top 40s to stay current.
Some songs are just classic. Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” is one of those songs that anyone can sing. It’s great for karaoke which makes it perfect for singing at the top of your lungs while cruising down I-95. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is epic and should probably be on every playlist ever made. It’s that song that everyone should sing along with. And, if you’re with the right people, they’ll even do the voices and the guitar parts with you. 😉
Then there’s the songs about the road itself, like Rascall Flatt’s “Life is a Highway” and “Hit the Road Jack” by Ray Charles. They’re the ones to start off the trip because they get you in the mood for driving.
You have to have some summer anthems for sure. When I was in high school, I had a jam each summer. It was that song that came on the radio every time I was in the car, and I yelled for someone to turn it up and I sang it at the top of my lungs! “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot was one of those songs. There are other songs, like Yellowcard’s “Ocean Avenue” that just feels summery, no matter when you heard it.
You also have to make sure there are plenty of songs that everyone can sing along to. Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” is perfect for singing with the girls. a-Ha’s “Take on Me” is that song that no one can hit the notes, but we all try! Also, if you’ve been to any summer baseball game, you know how quickly everyone joins in with Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”. And no summer concert is done til the band cover’s Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and the crowd goes wild!
Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” is one of those songs that so many of us secretly love (as seen in that one scene in Pitch Perfect). ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” has gotta be another one. Even the guys will try to hit those notes at some point.
And what’s a good roadtrip without a little car dancing? Nobody can be still when “YMCA” by The Village People comes on. You might even get a few disco moves from someone if you add in the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive”.
You also have to be sure to have some of the current radio hits to keep one foot in this decade. I’m currently digging the newest hit from Justin Timberlake “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” and Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” are so catchy, I can’t stop singing them, so they’ve made it onto several playlists I’ve got going at the moment.
