Life is short.

This past week, we lost an old friend of ours to a tragic accident. He was an all-around good guy, the kind that everybody liked. He was out driving late one night, and a drunk driver plowed into his car. He was killed on impact. The other driver walked away with minor injuries.

Why does it always seem like the bad things happen to the good people? He’s survived by a wife and two kids. A family who wasn’t prepared to lose him.

“Wasn’t prepared.” Is anyone ever actually prepared? Sure, we can prepare financially with life insurance and savings accounts. We can make sure people know our final wishes with an official will. And, we can make sure to know how to do the everyday things our significant others do that we take for granted. But, if the worst happens, are we actually prepared?

It’s one of those things that you see in the news and on TV, and you think, “Well, that could never happen to me.” I bet his wife thought that right up until that 4am call that woke her up. The 4am call that would forever change her world.

Life is short.

You never know what can happen. Whether you live in a nice part of town or a not-so-nice part. Whether you’re rich or poor. Whether you’re a good person or a bad person.

Life is short.

Remember that. But don’t use it as a reason to live in fear and caution, constantly worried and anxious about what could happen. Take risks and be adventurous! Use it as motivation to live life to the fullest.

Tell the people you love how much they mean to you. Spend time with your friends and family. Put down your phone and really be there with them. Call your mom. Visit your grandparents. Get together with your cousins. Start a blog with your best friend.

Life is short.

Don’t let yours end, to have people talk about how you could have done so much more. Live, so that, whenever your time does come, people will have many stories to share about you because your life was so full. Live, so that people won’t mourn that you’re gone, but that they’ll celebrate how great of a life you lived.

Life is short.

Don’t waste it.
