October, as most people are aware, is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Many people have been touched personally by this disease, and many more have friends and family who have fought the fight against breast cancer.
One man is helping others to fight it with laughter. Bob Carey’s wife Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her fight against it began. Even after beating it once, it came back in 2006, but she fought it again. The support from her husband’s work was a key element in that fight because laughter truly is the best medicine.
The Tutu Project is a simple concept: this kinda crazy guy dresses up in nothing but a pink tutu, and goes out and takes pictures of himself in random places in that tutu. It started out as a way to make his wife laugh, then she started taking the pictures with her to her chemotherapy sessions and sharing them with her fellow fighters. Everyone enjoyed them! The couple even self-published a book called Ballerina that included Bob’s images and funny stories and anecdotes, and the net proceeds go directly to The Carey Foundation that they established in 2012.
I really like this idea because it’s different! It’s creative, it’s joyful, it’s cheerful, and it’s gone viral. It’s always good when something good goes viral in this day and age.
So, throughout October especially, say a prayer for those fighting against breast cancer and for their families who are supporting them. And if you yourself are fighting this disease, know that we are all rooting for you.
Check out another favorite organization of mine: Feel Your Boobies! They promote early detection in young women.
To the young girls who think it couldn’t happen to them, remember to check yourself every month! In the shower, laying in bed, wherever. It doesn’t even take 5 minutes for you to inspect yourself for lumps, and early detection is one of the biggest keys.
